MPMC Nurses Celebrate National Nurses Week

5/11/2011

As part of Maria Parham Medical Center’s observance of National Nurses Week (celebrated each year from May 6 through May 12), “Florence Nightingale” made a surprise appearance at an event planned to honor the nurses at Maria Parham.  Nightingale, known as the founder of modern nursing, was portrayed by Susan Romine, RN, PICC nurse at the hospital.  She wore a vintage nursing uniform styled after the Crimean War era (mid 1850’s).  The uniform, on loan from the Charles S. Wilson Memorial School of Nursing in Johnson City, New York, has been used in capping ceremonies in their nursing school since 1945.  Shown around Nightingale (center) are a few Maria Parham nurses, helping to celebrate.
