MPMC's Rehabilitation Department Purchases New Video Analysis System
People frequently ask those who work in the healthcare field, “What is the key to pain-free movement?” Certainly WHAT we do is important; yet, just as important, is HOW we do it. In doing anything from swinging a golf club to throwing a baseball or even just walking down the street, the mechanics of movement are a key factor in whether or not we have pain. If poor mechanics exist, you may hurt despite endless efforts to feel better.
So, what can be done to correct faulty mechanics? The first step is to identify them. This can prove very difficult even to the most trained therapists. Maria Parham Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Department recently purchased a ‘High Speed-Slow Motion Video Analysis System’ to help with this very issue.
This high-speed system, named the “SOL SideKick™”, by Sports Motion Inc, can record any motion in up to 1000 frames per second (standard film is 24). It is portable and can be used in any indoor or outdoor setting. Accompanied by unique analysis software (Pro-Trainer DV), the system provides a seamless interpretation of problem movement patterns.
The new system has immediately proved to be an invaluable addition to the department. Staff members in Rehab are able to analyze how one moves in greater detail than could ever be captured by the naked eye. As Eric Price, a physical therapist in the department states, “This system affords us, as clinicians, an incredible ability to identify key problems in a patient’s movement patterns. With the extreme detail the system provides, we are then able to help correct the problem.”
